Dyes form an integral part of our day to day life, they are used in clothing, shoes, printer paper and pulp, adhesives, art supplies, beverages, ceramics, construction, cosmetics, food, glass, paints, polymers, soap, wax, biomedicine etc., infact in everything. Researches show that today, dyes are available in every imaginable color. Dyes are no more just colors, they are indispensable part of many industries. For example, they are colorant for plastics, textile etc., while many industries use dyes for inks and tinting. Dyes can be availed in various forms like dry powders, granules, pastes, liquids, pellets, and chips. Dyes are mostly tailor-made to suit the specialized requirements of different industries.
Properties:
- Resistance to heat
- Resistance to weather conditions
- Resistance to ultraviolet light (UV)
- Some products are water soluble
- Conducts electricity
- Contain reinforcing fibers
- Free from heavy metals
Did you Know?
Dyes form an integral part of Microbiology and are used to make microorganisms distinctly visible and also differentiate them. Crystal violet (C-8650) and Safranine (S-0700) are the two dyes, which are used in Gram's Stain - a technique of staining that is used to classify bacteria. In this technique, the bacterial specimen is stained with crystal violet and then is treated with an iodine solution. This process is followed by discolorization with alcohol, and lastly counter stained with safranine. The research shows Gram-positive bacteria is able to retain the violet stain, while its negative counter-part is not.

In the present times, pigments are used in almost every thing. There is no industry where pigments or dyes do not play a significant role. But, now we are faced with the challenge to discover pigments long-lasting applications and environmental- friendly nature. A few of the important applications of Pigments can be mentioned below:
Paints
Pigments have varied application paint industry that includes providing vivid colors to paints used for decorative and protective coatings, paints that are oil and resin based, in automotive finishes, emulsion paints, distempers etc.
Printing Inks
Pigments also find application in all kinds of printing inks, which includes inks for printing metal foils, lacquers etc.
Leather & Textile
Pigments are used for finishes of leather and textiles. Fibers such as nylon, silk, cotton etc., are colured using differnt types of dyes & pigments. A pigment print paste includes an additive comprising a diorganopolysiloxane. Heating the pigment printed textile results in cross-linking, producing advantageous results such as improved color fastness, improved resistance to crocking and abrasion, improved wash-ability etc.
Coloration of Plastics
Pigments find host of applications the plastic industry such as poly vinyl chloride(PVC), rubber and synthetic polymers, urea-formaldehyde(U-F) and melamine-formaldehyde moulding powders polystyrene, nylons, polyfins, etc.
Coloration of Cement Glass Paints
Pigment find host of applications for coloration of cement glass paint. These eco -friendly colors have no binders involved in them and are used for many other applications.
Colors for Cosmetics
Pigment exhibit color strength and purity that enhances the luxurious shades of the cosmetics. Pigments used for colors of cosmetics is based on calcium sodium borosilicate and are coated with titanium dioxide and iron oxides.
Coloration for Papers
Pigment dispersions are specially developed and designed for some very diverse applications like coloration of paper pulp, tissue papers, insulation material coloring etc. These dispersions are Eco-friendly, with no binders and are APEO free.
